How to Be a Successful Graduate Student

It doesn't take very long to realize that graduate studies are very different from undergraduate work. It isn't until your last years of your bachelor's degree that you feel you're really in control of your future. Lack of motivation, discipline and enthusiasm can break you as a graduate student. Follow these steps for success.

• step 1: Set goals. By the time you become a graduate student, you shouldn't still need to choose what you want to do in life. Decide if you want to go into the business, academic or public sector. Diversify your studies wherever possible for the greatest success in the working world.

• step 2: Take the value of your time seriously. You'll be juggling classes, hands-on experience, extracurricular activities, work and your personal life all at the same time. Make yearly, monthly, weekly and daily to-do lists for success in keeping both short-term and long-term goals. This kind of organization goes a long way in helping you maximize your time.

• step 3: Add to your knowledge constantly. Seek out advice from professionals on the faculty and in the community. Ask focused questions and reflect on the answers. Keep a journal or log of things you've learned that you feel are important for your future work. Tap into trade magazines and scholarly journals in your field to keep abreast of new developments.

• step 4: Join a trade association. Some give student discounts. Try to attend at least one event every few months. Consider taking classes in marketing or public relations even if you're not in the communications field. These will help you understand how you can make yourself stand out from the crowd.
